History Of The Hofbrau

The Hofbrau has been part of the
rich history of Grand Traverse and Benzie counties for over 75 years.
Its transformation from a sleepy bar and grill to a casual dining
destination makes it a favorite of local residents and seasonal visitors
alike.
It began as a country
family home. In the late 1920's a grocery store / filling station
complete with laundress service was added to the existing structure.
After prohibition, a tavern was established on site. Known as "Filip's
Tavern" until 1945 and "Peterson's Tavern" from 1945 -
1950, the tavern/restaurant was a lively gathering place for area
residents and visitors to Northern Michigan. It was renamed
"The Hofbrau" in 1950. Until 1997 some food was still
cooked in the occupied living quarters and passed through to the
restaurant. In 1998 the family/owners moved out and a major
renovation began. A new state of the art kitchen was added, the old
living quarters were converted into dining space and huge addition was
built.
Over the same period of
time, Interlochen's famous music camp was developing into the
internationally renowned "Center for the Arts". The
Hofbrau became a spot for everyone to congregate, chat, and sometimes
sing. Through the years, many world famous musicians and
entertainers have enjoyed the hospitality of the Hofbrau. The list
would be too long to enumerate here, but they all seemed to enjoy the
homey and friendly atmosphere with 'just plan up-north folks'.
Today, The Hofbrau offers
a rustic ambiance with fantastic food, a creative menu, dating dinner
specials, and sensational desserts. It features a huge selection of
beers, more than 100 wines and a fully stocked bar. On Sundays the
"Blues Brunch" includes a carving station featuring slow roasted
Prime Rib and Dearborn bone-in ham, omelet station, homemade Belgain
waffles, chocolate dipped strawberries, home desserts and pastries, a
Bloddy Mary Bar with over 100 hot sauces and 50 Bloody Mary mixes to
choose from. In the bar area there are three 10-foot big screen TV's
to view your favorite sporting events or to engage in a lively game of NTN
trivia.
The Hofbrau was named THE
NORTHERN EXPRESS Readers Choice Award Winner in seven different
categories, including: "Best Beer Selection", "Best All
Around American Cuisine", "Best Steaks", "Most Kid
Friendly", "Best Brunch", and "Most Friendly
Staff".
